Google Snake Game Mods: What They Are and How They Work

Search for the Google snake game and you will quickly run into talk of “mods” — dark mode, strange new boards, extra speeds. Here is what those mods actually are, how the famous mod menu is installed, and what to keep in mind before using them.

What Google Snake mods are

Google’s built-in snake (the one that appears when you search “play snake”) ships with a small settings menu. Mods are community-made scripts that expand that menu with options Google never shipped: extra themes such as dark mode, animated colours, different board shapes, new items, and more game modes. They are not made by Google — the best-known set is maintained by a community group called DarkSnakeGang, which publishes everything openly on GitHub.

How the mod menu is installed

The popular “More Menu” mod uses a clever trick: it is distributed as a bookmarks file rather than an extension. The usual steps look like this:

1. Download the MoreMenu.html file from the project’s GitHub releases page.
2. In Chrome, open the Bookmark Manager and choose Import bookmarks, selecting that file. It lands in an “Imported” folder.
3. Search “snake game” on Google, open the game, and click the imported “More Menu Stuff” bookmark while the game’s settings screen is open.

A new panel of options then appears inside the game. Removing it is just as easy: don’t click the bookmark, and the game runs completely stock.

Things to keep in mind

Mods are third-party code. They are open source and widely used, but they are not supported by Google, they can break whenever Google updates the game, and on managed school or work devices importing bookmarks may be restricted. If a modded game stops working, removing the bookmark and reloading normally fixes it.

Want extra modes without installing anything?

If what you really want is variety — different boards, speeds and wall rules — you don’t need mods at all here. Our site builds the variations straight into separate games: a wrap-around Google-style board, a hard mode, a giant board, a relaxing zen mode and eight more — no downloads, no bookmarks, nothing to import.

FAQ

Frequently asked

What are Google Snake mods?

Community-made scripts — best known from the DarkSnakeGang GitHub project — that add extra themes, boards, items and modes to the settings menu of Google’s built-in snake game. They are not official Google features.

How do I install the Google Snake mod menu?

The common method is importing the project’s MoreMenu.html file through Chrome’s Bookmark Manager, then clicking the imported bookmark while the game’s settings screen is open. The extra options appear inside the game.

Are Google Snake mods safe?

The well-known mods are open source and widely used, but they remain unofficial third-party code: Google doesn’t support them, updates can break them, and managed school or work devices may block the bookmark import.

Can I get extra snake modes without mods?

Yes. Our site ships the popular variations as separate built-in games — wrap-around, hard, big-board, zen and more — so you can play them with nothing to install.
